Montgomery Sole is a square peg in a small town, forced to go to a school full of jocks and girls who don't even know what irony is. It would all be impossible if it weren't for her best friends, Thomas and Naoki. The three are also the only members of Jefferson High's Mystery Club, dedicated to exploring the weird and unexplained, from ESP and astrology to super powers and mysterious objects.

Then there's the Eye of Know, the possibly powerful crystal amulet Monty bought online. Will it help her predict the future or fight back against the ignorant jerks who make fun of Thomas for being gay or Monty for having two moms? Maybe the Eye is here just in time, because the newest resident of their small town is scarier than mothmen, poltergeists, or, you know, gym.

My Thoughts:

I read and loved the graphic novel This One Summer by Mariko and Jillian Tamaki. So of course I was excited for this novel by Mariko Tamaki. I really enjoyed her storytelling style in This One Summer as was interested in seeing it in novel form. I was not disappointed.

Saving Montgomery Sole by Mariko Tamaki had feel to it that I really enjoyed. Montgomery Sole herself was a character I really liked getting to know. She was quirky and delightful while also being confused and a bit angry with things going on in her life. Oh yes. I could so relate to those feelings! As the reader (and an adult reader at that) there were times when her behavior drove me a bit crazy. But this was because I remember making similar mistakes and now have a different perspective. Her character just felt so authentic and I wanted the best for her.

I also really loved those characters who surround Montgomery… her two best friends and her moms. Oh how I loved her moms! It’s always nice to see caring parents who are doing the best they can 🙂 And the mystery club! So fun.

Saving Montgomery Sole is a quieter book and I really loved it for exactly that.
