When Ileni lost her magic, she lost everything: her place in society, her purpose in life, and the man she had expected to spend her life with. So when the Elders sent her to be magic tutor to a secret sect of assassins, she went willingly, even though the last two tutors had died under mysterious circumstances.

But beneath the assassins’ caves, Ileni will discover a new place and a new purpose… and a new and dangerous love. She will struggle to keep her lost magic a secret while teaching it to her deadly students, and to find out what happened to the two tutors who preceded her. But what she discovers will change not only her future, but the future of her people, the assassins… and possibly the entire world.

My Thoughts:

Why didn’t I pick this one up earlier?!? That summary is exactly my kind of book! Magic and assassins and intrigue… what a great combination.

Ileni was an interesting and fierce character. I liked that she kept me guessing throughout the book. There were things about her and her situation that I thought I had figured out but proved to be wrong. I love it when this happens! It makes it so much better when you learn more and more about her.

I was totally fascinated by the assassins and the assassins’ cave! I couldn’t read enough about it. I wanted to know all the history of the assassins in general and each individual one. Where did they come from, how did they start, what is their day to day life like? EVERYTHING! I especially loved getting a glimpse into Sorin’s perspective. Stars, did I love him!!!! So, so much!!

Basically this is a great read for fans of fantasy stories! I’ll certainly be booktalking it with my middle schoolers.

I take it this is the 1st book in a new series?

I’m intrigued by this one because I’ve seen mixed reviews, and it seems like most people either love it or hate it, not a whole lot of in-between.
