Blog Tour: Mighty Jack and the Goblin King

August 9, 2017 Blog Tour 1

Welcome to the next stop on the blog tour for Ben Hatke’s Mighty Jack and the Goblin King! My students and I adore the first book, Mighty Jack, so I could not wait to check this one out. Here’s more about the book:

The garden behind Jack’s house has gone wild with creatures set loose by the magic beans Jack and his kid sister Maddy planted. One particularly mean creature has kidnapped Maddy and carried her off. Now Jack and his neighbor Lilly must follow her to a world between worlds beyond the vines and stalks, where giants grind the bones of human children to feed their beast in the castle up above, and a fearsome goblin king rules down below. It’ll take more than Lilly’s bag of concoctions and tricks, and more than one hero, to rescue Maddy, reunite Jack’s family, and bring them all safely home again.

My Thoughts:

Mighty Jack and the Goblin King by Ben Hatke picks up right where Mighty Jack left off (that cliffhanger ending!!!!!) We dive right into the action and it doesn’t let up. This makes for a very compelling read. I devoured it far more quickly than I anticipated. I even ended up going back through to take my time and look more closely at the gorgeous artwork.

The illustrations and coloring are so, so great. I absolutely love the style. It’s simply captivating. I would frame and hang any of the panels in my office. They really bring the story to life.

And oh what a story! Giants and goblins and dragons and magical creatures of all kinds… what’s not to love? Even with all these interesting characters the human kids are what stand out. Jack and Lilly and Maddy are the heart of the story. I love how they help each other. There isn’t one “hero” but rather three kids learning about their own strength and the strength of their friends. They make mistakes but keep going. I just love them!

Another delightful installment in the Mighty Jack series. Check out any of Ben Hatke’s work. You won’t be disappointed.
