This week’s featured book for the Summer of Sarah Dessen is Keeping the Moon. This is the perfect summer read! Summer_Of_Sarah_Dessen_FullCalendar

My Thoughts:

There is so much I love about Keeping the Moon! I forgot how much I loved it until I re-read it earlier this year. I spent the whole re-read rediscovering all the things I adore about this story. Here, in no particular order, are the top five:

Colby Beach: Keeping the Moon is our first introduction to Colby Beach! This is my favorite setting for Sarah’s books. It was so fun to experience it again for the first time. Many of the places and characters introduced in this book make appearances in later stories. My favorite is the Last Chance Cafe! Much of this book revolves around the cafe and those who work there. I loved being back!

Waitressing: The main characters all work at the Last Chance Cafe. As some one who has worked in one restaurant or another for nearly a decade I loved the waitressing aspects Sarah included! From rude customers to the fun of working with great people… it was all so familiar!

Friendships: This book has one of the very best fictional friendships ever! Morgan and Isabel forever! They have so much fun, know all of each others’ secrets, and are incredibly loyal. And the way they welcome Colie? I totally want to be friends with them. Strong female friendships for the win!

Quirky Characters: I would say this is Sarah’s quirkiest book and I just love that about it. Norman and Mira are some of my favorite characters. The town sees them as “different” but they know who they are and are true to themselves. This really ties in to the next thing I loved…

Self-Esteem: This book is a lot about loving who you are and finding strength in what makes you, you. Sarah does such a great job exploring this issue through the different characters. I want to hand this book to every teen (or adult!) I know dealing with issues of self-esteem!

Obviously you need to read Keeping the Moon! It’s the perfect summer read!!!
