I am so excited to talk about this book! The Isle of the Lost by Melissa de la Cruz is a prequel novel to the upcoming Disney Channel original movie Disney’s Descendants! A movie and book about the children of Disney’s worst villains? Yes, please!! Here’s more about the book…
About the Book:
Twenty years ago, all the evil villains were banished from the kingdom of Auradon to the Isle of the Lost–a dark and dreary place protected by a force field that makes it impossible for them to leave. Stripped of their magical powers, the villains now live in total isolation, forgotten by the world.
Mal learns from her mother, Maleficent, that the key to true darkness, the Dragon’s Eye, is located inside her scepter in the forbidden fortress on the far side of the island. The eye is cursed, and whoever retrieves it will be knocked into a deep sleep for a thousand years. But Mal has a plan to capture it. She’ll just need a little help from her “friends.” In their quest for the Dragon’s Eye, these four kids begin to realize that just because you come from an evil family tree, being good ain’t so bad.
Isle of the Lost is the spell-binding prequel to Disney Descendants, A Disney Channel Original Movie Event this summer!

As if I wasn’t already excited enough about this book I got the opportunity to participate in a group interview with Melissa de la Cruz!! Unfortunately a variety of tech fails that day made me miss the call ***SOB*** However, I was able to get a transcript of the interview so I could share some of the highlights with you. I also have a pretty great giveaway thanks to Disney Publishing!
Interview Highlights:
There were so many great questions asked during the call! I’m going to focus on excerpts from three that I had on my list as well.
Sara from Novel Novice asked my number one question… what is it about villains that makes them so appealing? I really liked what Melissa had to say about their motivation…
… I think what’s appealing about them is that they really know what they want, you know?
So their motivations and their desires are kind of naked and grasping. And, you know, it’s out there. Maleficent, she wants to get revenge for not being invited to the party. Jafar wants to rule Agrabah. The Evil Queen wants to be the fairest of them all.
So it’s kind of like we know them really well because we know what they want. And even though what they want isn’t very good or noble, having that desire is very human, and that ambition.
So I think we really relate to that. And I think we’re kind of drawn to people who can really say without apology this is what I want. I’m going to get it, and I’m going try.
Benji from Laughing Place asked about what drew Melissa to the Disney Descendants franchise. This was something I wanted to know too!
…what attracted me to the project was that I love fairy tales. And I actually wanted to write a fairy tale retelling. And I had just talked to my agent that morning and told him I want my next project to be a fairy tale retelling.
And that day, I was having lunch with Jeanne Mosure, who’s the head of Disney Publishing. And she asked me to write The Descendants. And I said, “Oh, my God. This is so crazy. I just told my agent I wanted to write fairy tales. And now I’m getting the biggest Disney fairy tale of all.”
…And I was really excited. I’ve been a huge fan of Disney. When I was in college, I wrote Michael Eisner a fan letter. And it was really like a fan letter to the company. But I like their storytelling. So, I was really honored to be part of it.
Like me, Julie from Booking Mama wanted to know about Melissa’s favorite Disney movie/villain/Princess.
My favorite, I saw Cinderella when I was three years old. And it was the first Disney movie I’ve ever seen. And it’s always been my favorite. I think the makeover fantasy is really fun. You know, getting to go to the ball in this great dress and this fabulous coach and all her friends turn into footmen.
I just think there’s something really magical about thatstory. And I’ve always liked it. And, you know, the pettiness of the stepmother and the stepsisters just felt really realistic to
And I’ve always really liked that story. I think my favorite princess is probably Belle, though, because of the bookishness, you know?
Oh man! I am so sad I had to miss this!!! I love talking about fairy tales and villains and stories!
