The second installment in the epic Starbound trilogy introduces a new pair of star-crossed lovers on two sides of a bloody war.
Jubilee Chase and Flynn Cormac should never have met.
Lee is captain of the forces sent to Avon to crush the terraformed planet's rebellious colonists, but she has her own reasons for hating the insurgents.
Rebellion is in Flynn's blood. Terraforming corporations make their fortune by recruiting colonists to make the inhospitable planets livable, with the promise of a better life for their children. But they never fulfilled their promise on Avon, and decades later, Flynn is leading the rebellion.
Desperate for any advantage in a bloody and unrelentingly war, Flynn does the only thing that makes sense when he and Lee cross paths: he returns to base with her as prisoner. But as his fellow rebels prepare to execute this tough-talking girl with nerves of steel, Flynn makes another choice that will change him forever. He and Lee escape the rebel base together, caught between two sides of a senseless war.
Book One: These Broken Stars
My Thoughts:
I was a huge fan of book one in this series These Broken Stars. I listened to it on audiobook and it was perfection. So, I was really excited about starting This Shattered World. However, there were two things that made me hesitate:
- I kind of wanted to listen to it on audio since I loved the first one so much. Sometimes when I adore an audiobook of book one in a series I can’t read the next books until the audiobook comes out.
- This Shattered World features different characters than These Broken Stars. I’m always afraid I’ll miss the original characters so much I won’t give the new characters a chance!
Thankfully, in this case, my fears were unfounded. I really enjoyed This Shattered World. It’s an excellent companion to These Broken Stars. Since I had two fears about the book I’ll highlight two things I really loved:
- Jubilee and Flynn are great characters. We get the dual narration again, which I am so fond of! The situation on Avon is tense. Jubilee and Flynn appear to be on opposite sides of the conflict. Of course I loved this star-crossed aspect to their relationship! But even more than that, I loved how seeing both perspectives showed that the situation isn’t black and white. Jubilee and Flynn are able to see their actions through the eyes of someone on the other side. This really gives the reader a much greater understanding of the story and the characters. I loved everything about these two!
- I really loved how this story built upon the previous one. Yes, we have different main characters. However, it’s clear to the reader that the events are tied to what went down in book one. I enjoyed trying to piece together how it all connected. After the fact, there were some things I thought I should have noticed but didn’t! Maybe if I had re-read book one I’d have picked up on more. (It didn’t dampen my enthusiasm for the story one bit!) Also, Tarver and Lilac make an appearance! Oh joy, oh joy, oh joy! But that’s all I’ll say about that!
This Shattered World is a fabulous addition to this series. If you haven’t started it I highly suggest you do! Also, be sure to check out the novella This Night So Dark for more Tarver and Lilac 🙂
