Blog Tour: Strange the Dreamer – Review

March 28, 2017 ARC, Blog Tour, Book Review 0

I received this ARC from author for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

I could not be more excited to be on this blog tour, posting on Strange The Dreamer‘s release date! I absolutely adore Laini Taylor. Daughter of Smoke & Bone is one of my all time favorite book series. I could not wait to get my hands on Strange the Dreamer. It does not disappoint. Read on for more about the book and my review.

About the Book:

A new epic fantasy by National Book Award finalist and New York Times bestselling author Laini Taylor of the Daughter of Smoke & Bone trilogy.

The dream chooses the dreamer, not the other way around— and Lazlo Strange, war orphan and junior librarian, has always feared that his dream chose poorly. Since he was five years old he’s been obsessed with the mythic lost city of Weep, but it would take someone bolder than he to cross half the world in search of it. Then a stunning opportunity presents itself, in the person of a hero called the Godslayer and a band of legendary warriors, and he has to seize his chance to lose his dream forever.

What happened in Weep two hundred years ago to cut it off from the rest of the world? What exactly did the Godslayer slay that went by the name of god? And what is the mysterious problem he now seeks help in solving?

The answers await in Weep, but so do more mysteries—including the blue-skinned goddess who appears in Lazlo’s dreams. How did he dream her before he knew she existed? and if all the gods are dead, why does she seem so real?

In this sweeping and breathtaking new novel by National Book Award finalist Laini Taylor, author of the New York Times bestselling Daughter of Smoke & Bone trilogy, the shadow of the past is as real as the ghosts who haunt the citadel of murdered gods. Fall into a mythical world of dread and wonder, moths and nightmares, love and carnage.

Welcome to Weep.

 My Thoughts:

Oh, where do I even start? My love for this book is indescribable. But I’ll try 🙂 Here are my quick thoughts that I added to Goodreads upon finishing Strange The Dreamer:

I just cannot get over how incredible I find Laini’s writing. There are some amazing fantasy writers out there. But when I read one of Laini’s books? It’s a whole different level.  I feel transported to another world. The way she can make the mundane as lyrical as the fantastic… it’s unlike anything else I’ve ever read. As I said, wordsmith and artist of the highest order!!!

I could just eat her words up. I try to go slow and savor every bit. Inevitably, I end up gorging myself on her prose. The words that come to mind when I think about her writing style remind me of the best kinds of dessert! Lush, sumptuous, decadent, luxurious, rich, lavish, and most importantly, wholly satisfying!

Stars! This review is getting long and I haven’t even talked about the engaging plot, captivating world building, or  phenomenal characters. They are all there in spades! I fell so completely in love with all of these things within pages of the book. The prologue is indicative of the entire story. It’s so well crafted and shapes the reading experience so perfectly. And Lazlo has my heart completely (and not just because he’s a librarian!) Such an endearing character.

Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor is a story of searching for belonging and love, of honor and loyalty, of so many relatable things, in a world unlike any other. You won’t want to leave the pages of this story.

Random Note: I cannot wait to listen to the audiobook of this one! I happened to be talking with Laini and her audiobook publisher at BEA this past year and I mentioned that I thought Steve West would be perfect to narrate Laini’s writing. Of course I then played a sample of his narration for everyone. (I do this frequently. It’s kind of weird. I know. I just really love his narration.) Guess what? They totally hired him to narrate the book!!!! Check out a sample here.
