The heart-pounding sequel to the instant New York Times bestseller, Unbreakable, by New York Times bestselling Beautiful Creatures co-author Kami Garcia.

He is here... and he could be anyone.

Kennedy Waters lives in a world where vengeance spirits kill, ghosts keep secrets, and a demon walks among us–a demon she accidentally set free.

Now Kennedy and the other Legion members–Alara, Priest, Lukas, and Jared–have to hunt him down. As they learn more about the history of the Legion and the Illuminati, Kennedy realizes that the greatest mystery of all does not belong to any secret order, but to her own family. With the clock ticking and the life of someone she loves hanging in the balance, Kennedy has to ask the question she fears most: what is it about her past that has left her Unmarked?

My Thoughts:

Unmarked, like Unbreakable, is one of those rare “creepy” stories that I actually enjoy! The plot and pacing of the story are such that they override my aversion to all things scary. Even a baby like me can read Unmarked and actually enjoy getting the tuna salad scared out of them! (Leonardo, the Terrible Monster anyone?!?)

When talking about Unbreakable, I kept coming back to how  compulsively readable the book was. This remains true in Unmarked. Even though it was late and I was tired and I knew it was a bad idea, I couldn’t put the book down. When one question was answered there was always something else I wanted to know! I mean, with things like secret societies, demon possessions, and vengeance spirits, who wouldn’t be intrigued?!?!

I think one of my favorite parts of this story was getting more background. We learn more about Kennedy and her family history. Heck, Kennedy learns more about her family! Also, we get more insight into the secret societies that exist in the world of Unmarked. This was so cool. One of the best parts of books with an element of fantasy is learning about the things that make the world different. The diaries of the previous Legion members help to do this. However, the introduction of some new characters gives us even more insight. This added to both the world building and the action!

Unmarked by Kami Garcia is an excellent follow-up to Unbreakable. It’s great for readers looking for something a little darker that will keep you captivated. The perfect read for this time of year!
