Blog Tour: Supergirl: Being Super – Review + Giveaway

June 1, 2018 Blog Tour, Book Review, Giveaway 7

I’m really excited to be joining the blog tour for Supergirl: Being Super by Mariko Tamaki and Joelle Jones. Actually, I’m on this tour TWICE because I was so excited for it! Today I have a review and giveaway. Check back on the seventh for a Q+A with Mariko Tamaki!

About the Book:

She’s super-strong. She can fly. She crash-landed on Earth in a rocket ship. But for Kara Danvers, winning the next track meet, celebrating her 16th birthday and surviving her latest mega-zit are her top concerns. And with the help of her best friends and her kinda-infuriating-but-totally-loving adoptive parents, she just might be able to put her troubling dreams–shattered glimpses of another world–behind her.

Until an earthquake shatters her small town of Midvale…and uncovers secrets about her past she thought would always stay buried.

Now Kara’s incredible powers are kicking into high gear, and people she trusted are revealing creepy ulterior motives. The time has come for her to choose between the world where she was born and the only world she’s ever known. Will she find a way to save her town and be super, or will she crash and burn?

Caldecott Honor and Eisner Award-winning writer Mariko Tamaki (This One Summer) and Eisner Award-nominated artist Joëlle Jones (Lady Killer) combine forces for this incredible coming-of-age tale! This is the Girl of Steel as you’ve never seen her before.

Collects the limited series Supergirl: Being Super #1-4.

My Thoughts:

I had absolutely zero background knowledge about Supergirl going into this one. I mean, I figured she was probably somehow similar to Superman? But that was it. And I hadn’t really thought about that connection either. Supergirl: Being Super by Mariko Tamaki was such a fantastic introduction to the character and her story! I am hooked!

I don’t even know where to start. I loved everything about this one. Kara’s life is clearly very different from mine. I mean, she has no idea where she’s from or the extent of the “powers” she has. That has to be super stressful! Even with that huge difference, I could totally relate to her. She’s a teen girl just living her life. She has friends, family, school, etc… I loved how relatable she is.

The side characters in this one were so great. Kara’s friends and family were my favorites. Oh man. They’re the best! And Kara has really solid relationships with them. I particularly loved the friendship between her and her two best friends. It’s a strong female friendship that has the girls supporting one another and doesn’t center around a guy! Sad that seeing that is so rare.

And then there’s the story and artwork! They were together seamlessly to give us Kara’s origin story. I was totally captivated throughout the book. Devoured it in one sitting.

Basically, I highly recommend this one. It’s a great story and the artwork is perfect. Good for lovers of comics as well as newbies like myself! I will for sure add it to my library collection.
