Blog Tour: Batman – Nightwalker – Review

January 8, 2018 ARC, Blog Tour, Book Review 0

I’m pleased to be kicking off week two of the blog tour for Marie Lu’s Batman: Nightwalker! Today I have my review of the book, as well as a giveaway. But first, more about the book:

Title: BATMAN: NIGHTWALKER (DC Icons #2)
Author: Marie Lu
Pub. Date: January 2, 2018
Publisher: Random House Books for Young Readers
Pages: 272
Formats: Hardcover, eBook, audiobook

Before he was Batman, he was Bruce Wayne. A reckless boy willing to break the rules for a girl who may be his worst enemy.

The Nightwalkers are terrorizing Gotham City, and Bruce Wayne is next on their list.

One by one, the city’s elites are being executed as their mansions’ security systems turn against them, trapping them like prey. Meanwhile, Bruce is turning eighteen and about to inherit his family’s fortune, not to mention the keys to Wayne Enterprises and all the tech gadgetry his heart could ever desire. But after a run-in with the police, he’s forced to do community service at Arkham Asylum, the infamous prison that holds the city’s most brutal criminals.

Madeleine Wallace is a brilliant killer . . . and Bruce’s only hope.

In Arkham, Bruce meets Madeleine, a brilliant girl with ties to the Nightwalkers. What is she hiding? And why will she speak only to Bruce? Madeleine is the mystery Bruce must unravel. But is he getting her to divulge her secrets, or is he feeding her the information she needs to bring Gotham City to its knees? Bruce will walk the dark line between trust and betrayal as the Nightwalkers circle closer.

My Thoughts:

Of the four characters featured in the DC Icons books, Batman was the one I felt most familiar with. I knew his backstory and had watched multiple movies focusing on him. I was really curious about how this would affect my reading of Batman: Nightwalker. Honestly, I was a bit worried the movies/shows/etc… that I had seen would intrude on the book. Of course this was silly! Marie Lu is such a strong storyteller. Her Bruce Wayne was distinct and the plot kept moving so that my attention didn’t waver. I flew through the book!

What I loved most about Bardugo’s Wonder Woman: Warbringer was the strong cast of characters. Although Bruce has a smaller group surrounding him, that was still a highlight of this book for me. His friends, the adults in his life, and even the police detective were all interesting characters. Seeing them and how they relate to Bruce really helps the reader develop a better understanding of him as a character. And Madeleine! Goodness, can Marie do morally ambiguous character well! I loved the mystery surrounding her so, so much.

Batman: Nightwalker was an engaging book that kept me questioning right up until the end. A great installment in the DC Icons series.
