Moxie girls fight back!

Vivian Carter is fed up. Fed up with her small-town Texas high school that thinks the football team can do no wrong. Fed up with sexist dress codes and hallway harassment. But most of all, Viv Carter is fed up with always following the rules.

Viv’s mom was a punk rock Riot Grrrl in the ’90s, so now Viv takes a page from her mother’s past and creates a feminist zine that she distributes anonymously to her classmates. She’s just blowing off steam, but other girls respond. Pretty soon Viv is forging friendships with other young women across the divides of cliques and popularity rankings, and she realizes that what she has started is nothing short of a girl revolution.

My Thoughts:

I was on the blog tour for this one back in September. I read and absolutely loved the book (It’s on my list of top books read in 2017.) but never got around to reviewing it (or any other book in the past few months!!!) I am finally going back and sharing my love.

I have adored all of Jennifer Mathieu’s books (The Truth About Alice, Devoted, Afterward.) She writes about some really intense issues with honesty and respect. I so appreciate the fact that she doesn’t skirt round the tough stuff, but rather approaches it head on. I think this is why I’m so captivated by each of her books… they just draw you in and you can feel how authentic it all is.

Moxie might just be my new favorite of hers. I am all about teenage girls starting a feminist revolution in their schools! Like, I am so here for that!!! I especially like the way it was done in relation to the Riot Grrrl movement. The inclusions of the zines Viv made was so cool!

Seeing the relationships grow between the girls at Viv’s school was probably my favorite part. I loved learning more about characters and what drew them to being a part of the movement. I also really liked the conversations between Viv and her mother. I always love seeing the parent/teen dynamic!

Femenist and fun, I really cannot recommend this book enough.

This one keeps popping up on my radar, and I’ve almost borrowed it a few times from my library, but I always put it back. I don’t know why. Obviously, I need to read it soon! Thanks for sharing!
