Recklessly loyal.

That’s how seventeen-year-old Arden Huntley has always thought of herself. Caring for her loved ones is what gives Arden purpose in her life and makes her feel like she matters. But lately she’s grown resentful of everyone—including her needy best friend and her absent mom—taking her loyalty for granted.

Then Arden stumbles upon a website called Tonight the Streets Are Ours, the musings of a young New York City writer named Peter, who gives voice to feelings that Arden has never known how to express. He seems to get her in a way that no one else does, and he hasn’t even met her.

Until Arden sets out on a road trip to find him.

During one crazy night out in New York City filled with parties, dancing, and music—the type of night when anything can happen, and nearly everything does—Arden discovers that Peter isn’t exactly who she thought he was. And maybe she isn’t exactly who she thought she was, either.

My Thoughts:

I’ve heard so many great things about Leila Sales’ books so I figured it was time I finally read one! I decided to start with this one for a few reasons. There’s a road trip, a night in NYC, and one of the characters keeps a blog… these are all things that peaked my interest!

Overall, I enjoyed this one. I absolutely loved reading about Arden’s road trip to NYC and the crazy things that happen there. Even more than that, I loved the way the author shows that people are not always what we think. Arden is on a mission to meet the Peter she knows from reading his blog. She soon learns that things are not always what they appear… and not just in regards to Peter. This was such a strong part of this book. I will say, I didn’t really connect that much with the characters outside of this. However, my students are crazy about them!

Tonight the Streets are Ours takes a really interesting look at the idea of “knowing” someone from reading what they share online. A solid contemporary read!
