An epic fantasy about dragons, dark secrets, Pendragons, and magic.

On the southernmost tip of Wilde Island--far from the Dragonswood sanctuary and the Pendragon Castle--live the native Euit people. Uma, who is half Euit and half English, and not fully accepted by her tribe, wants to become a healer like her Euit father. But the mad English queen in the north, desperate for another child, kidnaps Uma and her father and demands that he cure her barrenness. After her father dies, Uma must ensure that the queen is with child by the time of the Dragon Moon, or be burned at the stake.
Terrified and alone, Uma reaches out to her only possible ally: the king's nephew Jackrun, a fiery dragonrider with dragon, fairy, and human blood. Together, they must navigate through a sea of untold secrets, unveil a dark plot spawned long ago in Dragonswood, and find a way to accept all the elements--Euit, English, dragon, and fairy--that make them who they are.

My Thoughts:

The Wilde Island books by Janet Lee Carey are books I wish more people were reading! They are really interesting fantasy novels with dragons and fae and all kinds of good things! Dragon’s Keep came out in 2007, Dragonswood in 2012, and now we have In the Time of Dragon Moon. I love that you can read anyone of them without reading the others and still enjoy it. I think you’ll get much more out of the story if you read them in order, but it’s not a necessity. Each story stands on it’s own.

I forget how very much I love Wilde Island until I’m back in a story set there. I mean, I remember that I love it but I forget just how very much! Janet Lee Carey has crafted a very involved world for her readers. I love the world both in the physical make-up and setting of Wilde Island and the more political climate… the ways dragons, fae, and humans struggle to live together.

In the Time of Dragon Moon is a great addition to the Wilde Island story. I absolutely adored seeing old characters or learning about how actions in the previous books shaped the world of this one. But more than that, I loved seeing more of the island through Uma and Jackrun. Uma is half Euit and half English. The Euit are the native people of Wilde Island. We haven’t seen much of their story up to this point. I getting more.

Both Uma and Jackrun are struggling to accept themselves and embrace the things that make them different. While teens today are likely not dealing with the more fantastical elements of Uma and Jackrun’s struggles, I think they can relate 100% in a broader sense. I really appreciated the way Janet Lee Carey told this part of the story. It had me captivated!

In the Time of Dragon Moon is a rich and engrossing fantasy story. I think Dragonswood is still my favorite of the three but it’s a pretty close call!
