I’ve been a fan of The Mortal Instruments series since I first started reading YA back in 2008. I remember finishing up the last of my library books and feeling like I needed something to read RIGHT AWAY. The library was closed so I went to the small convenience store in my hometown. City of Bones was the only YA book they had. I bought it and was immediately sucked in. I couldn’t put it down!

Fast forward to City of Fallen Angels coming out. I devoured that book! But then I had a problem… what happened next?!?! It felt like the wait for the next book would be forever… and there would still be another! I decided then and there to wait until the series wrapped up to read the last two. I didn’t want to have that cliffhanger feeling 🙂  I knew I wanted to finish the series before Lady Midnight, but not too soon! I managed to wait until this last August to read City of Lost Souls and City of Heavenly Fire. I was not disappointed.

Rather than a spoilery review of the last two books I thought I’d just share a few things that I loved about finishing up this series.

  • Even though it had been a few years since I’d read a The Mortal Instruments book, I was immediately drawn back into the story. I read the recap of City of Fallen Angels on Recaptains, which helped with the highlights. Still, it was the feeling that I was back in a world where Shadowhunters and Downworlders exist that impressed me!
  •  I absolutely adored seeing more of the characters from The Infernal Devices! I don’t want to go into any details because it would be spoilery!(Note: I wouldn’t recommend reading City of Heavenly Fire until after reading  Clockwork Princess! There are spoilers!!)
  • I also really loved the way City of Heavenly Fire sets readers up for The Dark Artifices and Lady Midnight while still wrapping up The Mortal Instruments. It made me care so much more about the Los Angeles Shadowhunters 🙂
  • After thinking more and more about City of Fallen Angels I was a little hesitant to see Jace and Clary thrown in the middle of things again. Like, was it just going to drag on and on in the last two books? I was so pleased to find I needn’t have worried. I was so caught up in the stories that I flew through them… and those books were huge! Not that I would ever complain about having more Simon or Magnus 🙂
  • When I finally finished City of Heavenly Fire I was a sobbing wreck and I loved every minute of it. Clare writes such bittersweet series enders! Again, can’t talk much about it due to spoilers but I am so glad I finished these books!

Basically, if you were on the fence about finishing this series I highly suggest you do! And you should be very excited to get your hands on Lady Midnight in just a couple weeks!!
