About the Book: Galen, a Syrena prince, searches land for a girl he’s heard can communicate with fish. It’s while Emma is on vacation at the beach that she meets Galen. Although their connection is immediate and powerful, Galen’s not fully convinced that Emma’s the one he’s been looking for. That is, until a deadly encounter with a shark proves that Emma and her Gift may be the only thing that can save his kingdom. He needs her help–no matter what the risk. (goodreads)
My Thoughts: So, you’ve probably noticed that there are a slew of books coming out featuring mermaids. I’ve been really interested in trying one out. Of Poseidon was a great place to start. (Please don’t tell Galen I lumped him in with “mermaids!” I know he’s Syrena!!!)
Of Poseidon starts in the middle of a scene. Emma has walked face first in to a really good looking guy (who turns out to be Galen.) I like how we are introduced to Emma through this. It’s typical Emma… a bit clumsy and a bit embarrassing. That seems to be how it always goes for her. She’s not entirely comfortable in her skin. As the story progresses the reader realizes that this is likely because of her “Gift” (mentioned in the summary.)
There is a lot of tension in this story. Tension between Emma and her mother. Tension between those “of Poseidon” and those “of Triton.” Tension between Galen and those who believe he spends too much time with humans. And of course, the romantic tension between Emma and Galen. That last one was my favorite!
One of my favorite parts of the story was watching as Galen and the other Syrena who are spending time with humans learn more about human life. It was fun to see their take on pop culture and the customs of a typical American teenager. I also really liked the science aspect of the story. We get a look at what physically makes a Syrena different from humans.
The ending, while a bit predictable, is a total cliffhanger. I was NOT ready for the book to end. I have SO many questions that I still need answered! I’m looking forward to more in book two.
Of Poseidon is a fun summer read. Can’t wait? Get a taste from the chapter sampler here! Also, check out the Fierce Reads facebook page to see if Anna is coming to a bookstore near you! I know I can’t wait to get my book signed in Naperville 🙂
