Spell Bound & School Spirits

June 12, 2015 Book Review 0

This is going to be a bit different. I finished the final book in the Hex Hall trilogy and read the companion book within days of each other. Since much of what I have to say about them is the same, I thought I’d do two mini reviews in one post.

Just as Sophie Mercer has come to accept her extraordinary magical powers as a demon, the Prodigium Council strips them away. Now Sophie is defenseless, alone, and at the mercy of her sworn enemies—the Brannicks, a family of warrior women who hunt down the Prodigium. Or at least that’s what Sophie thinks, until she makes a surprising discovery. The Brannicks know an epic war is coming, and they believe Sophie is the only one powerful enough to stop the world from ending. But without her magic, Sophie isn’t as confident.

Sophie’s bound for one hell of a ride—can she get her powers back before it’s too late?

Fifteen-year-old Izzy Brannick was trained to fight monsters. For centuries, her family has hunted magical creatures. But when Izzy’s older sister vanishes without a trace while on a job, Izzy’s mom decides they need to take a break.

Izzy and her mom move to a new town, but they soon discover it’s not as normal as it appears. A series of hauntings has been plaguing the local high school, and Izzy is determined to prove her worth and investigate. But assuming the guise of an average teenager is easier said than done. For a tough girl who’s always been on her own, it’s strange to suddenly make friends and maybe even have a crush.

Can Izzy trust her new friends to help find the secret behind the hauntings before more people get hurt?

Rachel Hawkins’ delightful spin-off brings the same wit and charm as theNew York Times best-selling Hex Hall series. Get ready for more magic, mystery and romance!

General Thoughts:

As you can probably tell from my review of  DemonglassI kind of love this series! To reiterate what I said there, Rachel Hawkins is basically amazing. I adore her writing. The humor, the romance, the surprises! So. Much. Love. I just have so much fun reading her books. A few specifics for each of these books…

Spell Bound:

Gah!! Gah!! I don’t… I can’t… So much love. But also, WHY?!?!?!? I won’t spoil it by telling you what exactly I’m talking about but you will know if you read it! But seriously, this was a really great wrap-up to the events of the previous two books. I love that Rachel Hawkins keeps the pace moving from book to book. In Demonglass we learned some of Sophie’s dad’s secrets. Spell Bound reveals some of her mother’s! And of course we get more of other characters that we know and love 🙂 Basically, it was everything I hoped it’d be!

School Spirits:

I wasn’t sure how I’d feel about being in Sophie’s world but following a different character. All I can say after finishing is I need more of Izzy’s story!!! I just adored her. I loved watching her worldview change and expand. There were so many little parts of the story that I want to know more about. I’m so sad that there aren’t more Izzy books!

So, yeah. If you haven’t read Hex Hall you’re really missing out on a fun and witty read. It’s the perfect book to get you out of a reading slump!
