June “Recommended by…” Part One

June 14, 2014 "Recommended by..." 1

rec

“Recommended by…” is a monthly feature in which an awesome bookish person recommends a book that I just have to read. It’s posted in two parts. Part one is the intro to the recommender and the recommendation. Part two posts later in the month and recaps my thoughts on the book.

The Recommender:

Quinn is one of those quinnwonderful people that blogging and twitter brought into my life! She and I have such similar reading taste… and not just YA! We’ve both got a penchant for historical romance novels too! When I decided to do this feature I knew I need to ask Quinn for recommendations. I so wanted to see what she had in store for me! Before we get to the recommendation here’s a bit about Quinn in her own words:
My name’s Quinn, and I am a newly-turned thirty year old children’s librarian at a public library in Central New York. I absolutely love my job. The best part of my job is getting to work with kids, but being surrounded by books all day doesn’t hurt either.  I love reading books for all ages, although I have a very soft-spot for chidlren’s and middle-grade fiction.  I also am the momma to the two cutest dogs ever, Ginger Ella and Daphne Rose.

The Recommendation:

9781599902753Many stories tell of damsels in distress, who are rescued from the clutches of fire-breathing dragons by knights in shining armor, and swept off to live happily ever after.

Unfortunately, this is not one of those stories.

True, when Creel’s aunt suggests sacrificing her to the local dragon, it is with the hope that the knight will marry Creel and that everyone (aunt and family included) will benefit handsomely. Yet it’s Creel who talks her way out of the dragon’s clutches. And it’s Creel who walks for days on end to seek her fortune in the king’s city with only a bit of embroidery thread and a strange pair of slippers in her possession.

But even Creel could not have guessed the outcome of this tale. For in a country on the verge of war, Creel unknowingly possesses not just any pair of shoes, but a tool that could be used to save her kingdom…or destroy it.

Why did Quinn recommend this one:  I’ve read a lot of George’s books, and Dragon Slippers is one of my favorites.  When Creel is sacrificed to a dragon by her aunt in hopes of a knight rescuing Creel (and marrying her), Creel decides to rescue herself and ends up leaving the dragon’s lair with a strange pair of slippers.  The best part of this book is the dragons’ different, and unique personalities.  This is middle-grade/teen.

Uh, yeah. This book sounds PERFECT for me!! Isn’t Quinn the best?!?! Thanks so much to her for taking the time to come up with a recommendation! I might see if my niece will read this one with me 🙂
