…. I’m a middle school librarian. I’ve started a new program at my school called Red Wings Read (we’re the Red Wings!) Each year I’ll feature a book with students and staff all year long. The amount of awesome YA books out there can be daunting. I wanted to narrow it down to just one book I’m asking my staff to read so they can connect with students about it. This year we did Divergent and it has bee AMAZING! You can see a few posts about it on a blog I started just to share the activities.
One of the main reasons this was so successful was that we were able to get a copy of Divergent for each teacher’s classroom. This meant that they had a copy to read and then loan out to students. This made it so much easier for students to get their hands on the book!
I really want to continue doing this. It’s been far more successful than I ever imagined! So many students who “hate” reading have picked up the book and are so excited about it.
So, why am I telling you this? Next year I want to feature Wonder by R.J. Palacio. I think this book will work so well with some of the anti-bullying things we already have planned. This year we were lucky enough to be able to purchase copies of Divergent. We don’t have the funds to do so with Wonder next year. I’ve started a Donors Choose project and I just wanted to get the word out! I totally understand that money can be tight but if you feel like donating we’d appreciate it.
Give by March 15, 2014 and your donation will be doubled thanks to DonorsChoose.org. Just enter the code INSPIRE on the payment page and you’ll be matched dollar for dollar (up to $100).
Here’s the link again.
I feel a little awkward posting this on my blog but there’s just too much to say for twitter and I want to get the word out. I’m really passionate about connecting my students and staff through shared reading experiences. I’ve seen how powerful it can be 🙂
