About the Book: In the city of Lovecraft, the Proctors rule and a great Engine turns below the streets, grinding any resistance to their order to dust. The necrovirus is blamed for Lovecraft’s epidemic of madness, for the strange and eldritch creatures that roam the streets after dark, and for everything that the city leaders deem Heretical—born of the belief in magic and witchcraft. And for Aoife Grayson, her time is growing shorter by the day.

Aoife Grayson’s family is unique, in the worst way—every one of them, including her mother and her elder brother Conrad, has gone mad on their 16th birthday. And now, a ward of the state, and one of the only female students at the School of Engines, she is trying to pretend that her fate can be different. (goodreads)

My Thoughts: I bought this book because Holly Black and Richelle Mead blurbed it. I don’t typically buy books based on blurbs but as I’ve said before… any book with Holly Black’s name on it is one I’ll buy! That was back in February. I went on a bit of a book buying bender and ended up with WAY more books than time so I just never got around to it. Then I rediscovered audiobooks. Listening Library did a fabulous job with this one! Listen to an excerpt here!

Side note: Tamora Pierce recently gave this book four stars on goodreads and said she loved it. TAMORA PIERCE!!!! If that doesn’t tell you to pick it up I don’t know what will!

I was really impressed with this book. I loved the world, the characters, the action… everything! As a bonus, I am still a newbie steampunk reader and The Iron Thorn just reinforced my love for it!

The world Aoife lives in interested me. I could just tell that all was not what it seemed. I loved the ways that we learned how things work. There was so much going on. Just when I would think I had it all down some new piece of information would come to light and I’d be blown away again!

And the characters! Oh the characters. Aoife, Cal, Dean… DEAN! I loved their interactions. My heart just broke for Aoife. She was a character I wanted to read about. I liked her and was interested in the mystery surrounding her and her family. There is so much on her plate. Add to that the whole “may be about to go mad” thing and you can see why I just wanted at least one thing to go right for her. Plus she is a strong and courageous female lead. You have to love that!

I highly recommend this to fans of fantasy or those looking to try out steampunk. Mystery, adventure, magic, romance… The Iron Thorn has it all!
