Welcome to te next stop on the blog tour for Aimee Carter’s The Goddess Legacy. I am such a sucker for retellings or continuations of Greek mythology. This series is one of my favorites. Check out my reviews for The Goddess Test and Goddess Interrupted.
For millennia we’ve caught only glimpses of the lives and loves of the gods and goddesses on Olympus. Now Aimée Carter pulls back the curtain on how they became the powerful, petty, loving and dangerous immortals that Kate Winters knows.
Calliope/Hera represented constancy and yet had a husband who never matched her faithfulness….
Ava/Aphrodite was the goddess of love and yet commitment was a totally different deal….
Persephone was urged to marry one man, yet longed for another….
James/Hermes loved to make trouble for others-but never knew true loss before….
Henry/Hades’s solitary existence had grown too wearisome to continue. But meeting Kate Winters gave him a new hope….
Five original novellas of love, loss and longing and the will to survive throughout the ages.
As you can imagine, this story focuses on Hermes (aka James.) He is one of my very favorites in this series so I was thrilled to get to spend some more time with him! I love the way that each of these short stories gives the reader more insight about the god/goddess it focuses on.
In God of Thieves we see a different side of Hermes. He’s always been a bit on the outs with his family… he is the god of thieves after all! But this is different. Ever since everything with Persephone went down he is a total social pariah. Did he make a mistake in having an affair with her? Probably. Was everything that happened after his fault? Definitely not! Unfortunately his family has decided to use him as a scapegoat. They all shun him and he is so very, very alone. This just broke my heart! Poor Hermes! Of course he handles it with his own brand of humor and sarcasm. One line I particularly loved was, “Social exile was exhausting enough as it was, and lethargy wasn’t a good look on me.” Classic Hermes!
Amid all that he is dealing with already it is discovered that some of the older gods and goddesses have gone missing. Hermes is determined to figure out what is going on and how to stop it. He ventures to the mortal world where he meets Puck, a spitfire of a girl. From there everything takes off and we get to learn so much more about the world of The Goddess Test. We even get to see why all the gods and goddesses chose new names! God of Thieves is such a bittersweet story. It made me want to give Hermes a big ol’ hug!
Fans of the series won’t want to miss these stories. They really flesh out the gods and goddesses and make them more relatable. I like them even more now!
