Fangirl Friday: Boarding Schools

September 16, 2011 Uncategorized 6

My first vlog from my new place! I decided to expand Fangirl Friday to include more than just authors. This weeks topic: boarding schools. SO MUCH LOVE!!! As you will see I adore books set at a boarding school. In fact, I love them so much that I’m giving my favorite one of the year away! Check out the end of this post to find out more!

People/Books mentioned in the vlog:
Looking for Alaska by John Green
Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling
Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins
The Name of the Star by Maureen Johnson
White Cat and Red Glove by Holly Black
Hex Hall and Demonglass by Rachel Hawkins
The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau Banks by E. Lockheart
A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray
Spud by John van de Ruit
Evernight by Claudia Gray
Touch of Frost by Jennifer Estep
I’d Tell you I Love you but then I’d Have to Kill you by Ally Carter

And now for the giveaway. There have been a few books that have really blown me away this year. The Name of The Star by Maureen Johnson is one of those books (review to come.) It just so happens that it takes place at a boarding school in London. I was going to do a giveaway of it when I posted my review or as part of my one year blogging celebration but I changed my mind. I want to give away a pre-order now. The main reason I want to do it now is because I will be pre-ordering it from Books of Wonder so it will be signed and it will come with the fun surprises Maureen is including!

For those if us that Never attended boarding school I think they become a wondrous, romanticized, secretive place. Students against adults, rebellious angstY teens.
What a perfect place for a book. Supernatural or otherwise. Is it to late to go back in time and beg my parents to send me away? Lol

Favorite boarding school book? Vampire Academy. Love that books set @ schools don’t generally deal w/ a lot of outside distractions.

I have to agree with lots of others…can’t beat the Harry Potter books for best boarding school EVER.

Oh, wait wait wait! What about the Gallagher Girls series?? 🙂

Apart from the somewhat obvious choice of Harry Potter I would have to go with Looking for Alaska followed closely by the House of Night series.

I did a series of booktalks on Looking for Alaska, The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks, and A Great and Terrible Beauty in a YA Lit class a few years back. I also read the Ally Carter books. I love boarding school books because I wish I could have gone to boarding school and had the autonomy that the characters have.

I have never attended a boarding school, but boarding schools are the perfect setting for books, whether they are supernatural or not.
