Top Ten Books That Came Recommended
Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by

One of the best things about being a part of the book blogging community is the recommendations! I’m so used to being the person doing the recommending. It’s been lovely to get books recommended by others 🙂 The only problem is that I don’t always remember who recommended the book! Still, this is such a fun top ten!

1. 13 Little Blue Envelopes by Maureen Johnson recommended by John Green: Okay, it’s kind of cheap to start with this one since it wasn’t a personal recommendation at all but I am just so happy that I started reading her books. When I first read An Abundance of Katherines by John Green I was so incredibly in love with the book that I went online to learn more about the author and any other books he had. This led me to the Brotherhood 2.0 videos which led me to Maureen Johnson. It was great to discover two of my favorite authors from reading one books 🙂

2. A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving recommended by my sister: I have my sister to thank for recommending this book (and many other books I’ve loved!) This is one of the first books I remember reading and really thinking about (outside of school assigned reading!) I love the way John Irving tells his stories.

3. A Girl of the Limberlost by Gene Stratton-Porter recommended by my godmother: I love old books… not just an old publication date but actual antique copies. My godmother does as well and she got me hooked on collecting Gene Stratton-Porter books. I just love all the nature in every story! A Girl of the Limberlost and The Magic Garden are my favorites!

4. The Body Finder by Kimberly Derting recommended by Sophie Jordan: I won a copy of this book from a contest Sophie Jordan (author of the fabulous Firelight) had on her website. I don’t know that I would have picked it up on my own because the idea kind of creeped me out but I LOVED it!
5. Crown Duel (and basically every other book) by Sherwood Smith recommended by Anne Osterlund: Anne is the queen of quality recommendations on goodreads! I get annoyed by people who send out recommendations for every new book that comes out. Anne actually gives thoughtful reviews and she doesn’t bombard you. I’ve picked up a number of books on her recommendation.

6. Princess of the Midnight Ball by Jessica Day George recommended by Anne Osterlund: See above comment! I love fairy tales retold and Jessica Day George does such an amazing job with all of hers!

7. If I Stay by Gayle Forman recommended by Kiersten White and various bloggers: I heard so much about this one before I read it. Kiersten White is the first person I can remember really talking about it on her blog. She convinced me to read it!

8. Shade by Jeri Smith-Ready recommended by various bloggers on Twitter: I JUST read this one and ohmystars! Thank you, thank you, thank you Twitter peeps for talking about this fab book! LOVED it!

9. Ranger’s Apprentice Series by John Flanagan recommended by my middle school students: I daily recommend books to my middle schoolers so I LOVE it when they have books for me to read. These books have my boys stopping in EVERY DAY to see if the next one is returned yet! I really enjoy them.

10. The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows and Shadowed Summer by Saundra Mitchell recommended by Deborah Hipes at a YA lit conference: LOVED these books! The first one isn’t really YA but it has YA appeal. I read it on the plane to the ALAN conference in Orlando. It made the trip go by so quickly (I was going to say it made the trip “fly by” but then I realized that it would be a TERRIBLE pun!) Shadowed Summer has some of the most beautiful language! It’s also kinda creepy!! You should for sure read it as well as Saundra’s newest book The Vespertine!

I’ve actually read a couple of those lol.

I think the recommendation I remember the most is Daughter of the Forest by Juliet Marillier, that book completely tore me apart but its also one of the most beautiful stories I’ve ever read.

And Good Oil by Laura Buzo, 🙂 someone recommended it to me for my Aussie YA challenge and it blew my socks off.

I love great recommendations! 🙂 My brother (15) recommended the Ranger’s Apprentice series to me. He’s been reading them for about a year (I think, maybe less) and he kept telling me to read them. I just finished the first one, and I’m surprised by how much I really enjoyed it! 🙂 I love recommendations from kids!
