Natasha: I’m a girl who believes in science and facts. Not fate. Not destiny. Or dreams that will never come true. I’m definitely not the kind of girl who meets a cute boy on a crowded New York City street and falls in love with him. Not when my family is twelve hours away from being deported to Jamaica. Falling in love with him won’t be my story.

Daniel: I’ve always been the good son, the good student, living up to my parents’ high expectations. Never the poet. Or the dreamer. But when I see her, I forget about all that. Something about Natasha makes me think that fate has something much more extraordinary in store—for both of us.

The Universe: Every moment in our lives has brought us to this single moment. A million futures lie before us. Which one will come true?

My Thoughts:

Nicola Yoon’s debut Everything, Everything was one of my favorite reads of last year. I already know that The Sun is Also a Star will be a favorite of this year!

I loved that this book had a bit of a nontraditional story telling style. Chapters alternate between Daniel and Natasha, the two main characters. Interspersed throughout are “histories” of other characters and things. These histories are from an omniscient perspective. This was so cool. I loved how seamlessly all the extra information fit into the story and how it enhanced Daniel’s and Natasha’s stories.

Speaking of Daniel and Natasha, they’re basically the best. I was so interested in their lives and how the choices they were making affected their day. Did I mention that almost all of the events of the book take place over the course of one day?!? Many of the histories covered previous events and the characters think about the things that led them up to that point but still… basically a day. Again, so cool.

The Sun is Also a Star is an artfully woven story that is not to be missed. I was immediately drawn in and didn’t want to put it down. Absolutely loved it!
