Welcome to the next stop on the blog tour for Marissa Meyer’s Heartless! This is one of the more unique tours I’ve been on and I love it! It’s a countdown until the release of Heartless. It started on September 19th and goes until November 8th. And, you guys, there are daily challenges! I think that’s so cool! Check them out:
As of today there are 30 DAYS TILL HEARTLESS! Today’s task includes tagging your BFF in a #heartlesscountdown #sweepstakes post! Now, on to the review!
About the Book:
Long before she was the terror of Wonderland — the infamous Queen of Hearts — she was just a girl who wanted to fall in love.
Catherine may be one of the most desired girls in Wonderland, and a favorite of the yet-unmarried King of Hearts, but her interests lie elsewhere. A talented baker, all she wants is to open a shop with her best friend and supply the Kingdom of Hearts with delectable pastries and confections. But according to her mother, such a goal is unthinkable for the young woman who could be the next Queen.
At a royal ball where Cath is expected to receive the king’s marriage proposal, she meets Jest, the handsome and mysterious court joker. For the first time, she feels the pull of true attraction. At the risk of offending the King and infuriating her parents, she and Jest enter into an intense, secret courtship.
Cath is determined to define her own destiny and fall in love on her terms. But in a land thriving with magic, madness, and monsters, fate has other plans.
My Thoughts:
I am a huge fan of the Lunar Chronicles books by Marissa Meyer. However, I almost didn’t pick Cinder up! I’m so glad I did as it’s one of my favorite series and I would have totally missed out. Here’s where I make a confession: If Heartless wasn’t written by Marissa Meyer I don’t know that I would have read it. I’ve never read Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and avoid watching the Disney verison of Alice in Wonderland at all costs. Still, I didn’t want to nearly miss out again! I’m glad I gave Heartless a try. I ended up really enjoying it. I knew I could trust Marissa Meyer!
Meyer’s characters were what I really connected with in Heartless. Cath, Jest, Mary Ann… getting to know these characters and see how they interacted was what kept me invested in this book. I was interested in their relationships and wanted to know how everything in the book would play out for them. I especially loved the friendship between Cath and Mary Ann. I so just wanted them to get their bakery and live happily ever after!
The more I think about this book the more I realize that the things that really made me enjoy the story were the aspects Meyer added in to Wonderland. I still don’t love the world of Alice in Wonderland and all the crazy odd things it entails. However, I cared so much about the story Meyer was telling and the way she was portraying her main characters that my apathy toward Alice in Wonderland didn’t matter at all. I still found myself invested and falling for the world of Heartless. I think that’s really a testament to Meyer’s skill as an author. Well done!
Audiobook Clip:
I’m a huge audiobook fan. I just loved Rebecca Soler’s narration in The Lunar Chronicles. You can imagine that I was thrilled to see she would be narrating Heartless as well. Check out this brief clip from the beginning of the book:

I’m fascinated that you loved Heartless despite not liking the world of Alice in Wonderland! That really is a testament to a great author. I loved the characters and the spin that Meyer put on her own Wonderland, I was entranced. I’m not a huge Alice fan but I’ve read the book and I like the Disney cartoon. It was more that I couldn’t resist a fairy tale retelling, especially an origin story by a favorite author! Glad you gave it a chance 🙂
