Top Ten Most Unique Books I’ve Read
I’ve broken this one down into a few categories. Also, there are twelve books because I just needed the graphics to be in groups of three!
Type of Story:
The fact that I really enjoyed these books is what makes them unique! Typically I don’t go for scary!
1. The Name of the Star by Maureen Johnson: I slept with the lights on after this one. It made me laugh and terrified me. I don’t think that’s ever happened for me in the same book before!
2. The Waking Dark by Robin Wasserman: Straight up horror. I’ve never been able to finish a book like this before. This one just had such a great story and the telling was so expert. I actually liked it!
3. Phoenix Island by John Dixon: This one isn’t scary, per se. It just isn’t my typical read. But I couldn’t put it down!
Style:
These stories have a unique style that captivated me.
4. In the Shadows by Kiersten White & Jim Di Bartolo: The incredible way that the “text” story and the “artwork” story come together had me blown away. Not like any other book I’ve read.
5. Please Ignore Vera Dietz by A.S. King: I could have put any of her books her! I love the magical realism aspect. All are so well told and so different from each other and anything else out there.
6. Daughter of Smoke & Bone by Laini Taylor: The amazing lyricism of this book puts it in a category all it’s own. I’ve read other beautiful stories but nothing quite like Laini’s writing.
Setting/Character:
Two of these books are set in a world that is unlike any other I’ve read. The third has a character that is incomparable to any other!
7. Silver Phoenix by Cindy Pon: This amazing fantasy story is set in an Asian-inspired world. I’m sad that this makes it unique for me! Are there more out there I’m missing? I adored this one!
8. Dreamhunter by Elizabeth Knox: I remember reading this one years ago and being blown away by the idea of a place where dreams existed and could be captured and then shared in a theater like setting. It’s pretty amazing.
9. Unspoken by Sarah Rees Brennan: Kami is one of the best main characters I’ve ever seen. I love everything about her and want to see more like her!
Story:
Everything about these makes them unique!
10. We Were Liars by E. Lockhart: I’m not saying anything about this because you need to experience it yourself!
11. Grasshopper Jungle by Andrew Smith: Whoa. That was basically all I could think when I finished this one. Also, “Did that really just happen?!?” So weird and wonderful!
12. The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater: Yeah, there are so many aspects of this story that make it unique! Maggie Stiefvater is so clever! And maybe a bit twisted… in a good way of course 🙂

I also liked Daughter of Smoke and Bone, and Please Ignore Vera Dietz. I would add Midwinterblood to my list – I don’t like vampires, horror, etc., but I was totally engrossed with this one. I also enjoyed The Tyrant’s Daughter, too.

Midwinterblood is on my reading list for Spring Break next week! Glad to hear you liked it.

Oooh, so many books I still want to read! I’m especially excited about The Waking Dark and In the Shadows.
I loved Grasshopper Jungle (so funny!), Raven Boys (Ronan! <3), The Name of the Stars and DoSaB!
Heidi
Ronan forever!
La Coccinelle
Dreamhunter made my list, too. Daughter of Smoke & Bone does have a unique writing style; I really enjoyed that one. I haven’t read Grasshopper Jungle, though I’ve read reviews of it. While it doesn’t sound like my thing, it sure does sound unique!
Margo Berendsen
I really like how you broke these down into categories for why they were unique! I really want to read Dreamhunter (that premise sounds amazing!) and I’m glad for the reminder about Unspoken, that’s been on my TBR list.

Oh my gosh Heidi – I’m so happy you put Please Ignore Vera Dietz! I just read that book and freaking loved it. So creative and poignant. I need to check out some of these other books on your list! I’ve already pre-ordered We Were Liars 😉
