This is book two! SPOILERS FOR BOOK ONE AHEAD!
About the Book: With the Brotherhood persecuting witches like never before, a divided Sisterhood desperately needs Cate to come into her Prophesied powers. And after Cate’s friend Sachi is arrested for using magic, a war-thirsty Sister offers to help her find answers—if Cate is willing to endanger everyone she loves.
Cate doesn’t want to be a weapon, and she doesn’t want to involve her friends and Finn in the Sisterhood’s schemes. But when Maura and Tess join the Sisterhood, Maura makes it clear that she’ll do whatever it takes to lead the witches to victory. Even if it means sacrifices. Even if it means overthrowing Cate. Even if it means all-out war.
In the highly anticipated sequel to Born Wicked, the Cahill Witch Chronicles continue Cate, Maura and Tess’s quest to find love, protect family, and explore their magic against all odds in an alternate history of New England. (goodreads)
My Thoughts: I’m not sure I can talk about this book like a rational human being. When I think of it my main thought is, “NO! Just… Gah! I can’t even….. $%£*&@#%$&! Jess! That ending… are you trying to kill me!!” And after that my next coherent thought is, “Kissing… sigh” followed by a swoon. Hopefully now that I have that out of the way I can actually give you something you might want to know.
First things first, I was so happy to be back in the world of the Cahill Witch Chronicles. I mean, I would never actually want to live in the world but I loved visiting it again as a reader! As I said in my review of Born Wicked I love a good alternate history setting. And Jessica Spotswood has created a GREAT one! I couldn’t wait to learn more about the world, the Brotherhood, the Sisterhood and especially the asylum! I was not disappointed.
Cate has just joined the sisterhood and is not so pleased to be there. She is plagued with doubts about her powers, her sisters, Finn (FINN!!!!) and basically every decision she made that brought her to where she is. It is decidedly not easy to be part of a prophecy! As in Born Wicked, my heart just broke for this girl! Yes, she has made mistakes. But she is doing the best she can with the knowledge and power she has. There is so much responsibility on her young shoulders! Poor motherless girl!
And Finn. Oh dear goodness, I love him! I so hated that Cate left him behind in the last book (although I totally get why!) It was interesting to see how he has changed in this book and how his relationship with Cate evolves now that she is in the Sisterhood. I was so glad to see more of him than I expected in Star Cursed.
And of course there are Cate’s sisters, Maura and Tess. So much of what Cate has done has been for or because of them. I love young Tess but Maura and I have some things to discuss! She is very misguided and, in my opinion, selfish! A lot of it I can understand… it must be hard to always be a step behind Cate. But still, I just cannot justify her actions! You’ll know what I mean as you read the book!
I haven’t really talked much about the events of the book because I really enjoyed discovering everything for myself and learning new truths about the characters. I wouldn’t take that from you! Let’s just say I was very pleased to see that Star Cursed didn’t suffer from “lame second book syndrom.” Action, mystery, secrets, and romance! I loved it all!!
