About the Book: Choose: A quick death…Or slow poison…

About to be executed for murder, Yelena is offered an extraordinary reprieve. She’ll eat the best meals, have rooms in the palace—and risk assassination by anyone trying to kill the Commander of Ixia.

And so Yelena chooses to become a food taster. But the chief of security, leaving nothing to chance, deliberately feeds her Butterfly’s Dust—and only by appearing for her daily antidote will she delay an agonizing death from the poison.

As Yelena tries to escape her new dilemma, disasters keep mounting. Rebels plot to seize Ixia and Yelena develops magical powers she can’t control. Her life is threatened again and choices must be made. But this time the outcomes aren’t so clear…

My Thoughts: What rock have I been living under that I have not read this book?!?!? Magic and poison and intrigue and romance? I am SO IN! And, oh man, was I in. I could not get enough of listening to this one. I sat in my car long after I got to my destination and couldn’t wait to find out more.

I basically loved everything about this book. Yelena is fierce. She makes no excuses for her actions. She chooses the path that seems best for her with the knowledge she has and goes with it. She doesn’t want to be at anyone’s mercy. She does all she can to equip herself with the skills she needs to survive. Can you tell that I loved her? And Valek! Don’t even get me started on him! His character was one of my favorites ever.

Aside from the awesome characters the story itself kept me invested. I had to know how everything worked itself out. I loved the world that Snyder created. The twists and turns of the plot were well paced. It just had the exact feel that I want from a book. I cannot wait to read more!

Audioboook notes: Is it just me or does anyone else get annoyed with musical interludes between every chapter?!?!? It totally pulls me out of the story! Other than that… I loved it. Great narration. Perfect choice for the story.
