Top Ten Books I Recommend the Most
As a librarian I recommend books to my students every day. However, the books that I recommend to twelve and thirteen year olds are different from those I recommend in general. Also, this list changes depending on my mood and what I’m reading at the time! Still, the following books/authors are tried and true!
1. An Abundance of Katherines or really anything by John Green: No surprise here for anyone who knows me. I am a total John Green fangirl. Katherines was the first book of his I read. There is just something about that first book by a favorite author. It just sticks with you!
2. Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins: All of the adorableness. The book, the cover, the author. I love it all! Stephanie Perkins is definitely a go to recommendation!
3. The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie: Amazing. Simply amazing. If you haven’t read this one you need to. I cannot tell you how many students come up to me and say, “This is the first book I’ve ever finished and I LOVED IT!” Thank you Mr. Alexie.
4. Deadline or any other book by Chris Crutcher: Chris Crutcher fangirl for life. I think Whale Talk my be my favorite of his but Deadline seems to be a better starting place. This man. So, so amazing.
5. Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo: I’ve been raving about this book since I got to read it early for a pre-pub event with the author. Mal and the Darkling for life! (you cannot make me choose!)
6. White Cat by Holly Black (Red Glove review): Basically Holly Black is a genius and everything she writes is perfection (at least in my mind!) I love the world she created in her Curse Workers series. So well written.
7. Unspoken by Sarah Rees Brennan: I adore Sarah Rees Brennan something fierce. Her books, her humor, I just love it all. I think Unspoken may be my favorite of hers. Kami is the greatest!
8. Divergent by Veronica Roth: This is one that has been HUGE with my students lately. The cannot get enough. The copies are never in my library. They just keep getting passed around. I tell everyone about how much I love it!
9. Daughter of Smoke & Bone by Laini Taylor: So lyrical and gorgeous. This is another I got to read early for a pre-pub event and could not stop talking about. SO EXCITED to hear the movie news!
10. The Key to the Golden Firebird by Maureen Johnson: Like I said before, there is just something about the first book you read from in author. In this case it’s also her first published book. This one gets less attention than some of her others but I still love it the most 🙂
Wait. What? I’m already at ten?!?! But there are SO MANY MORE! Like anything by Sarah Dessen or Cinda Williams Chima or Jennifer Echols! Seriously. I am always talking about and recommending books. This list doesn’t even begin to scratch the surface! Ah well… it’s a start 🙂
