About the Book: Cinder returns in the second thrilling installment of the New York Times-bestselling Lunar Chronicles. She’s trying to break out of prison—even though if she succeeds, she’ll be the Commonwealth’s most wanted fugitive.
Halfway around the world, Scarlet Benoit’s grandmother is missing. It turns out there are many things Scarlet doesn’t know about her grandmother and the grave danger she has lived in her whole life. When Scarlet encounters Wolf, a street fighter who may have information as to her grandmother’s whereabouts, she has no choice but to trust him, though he clearly has a few dark secrets of his own.
As Scarlet and Wolf work to unravel one mystery, they find another when they cross paths with Cinder. Together, they must stay one step ahead of the vicious Lunar Queen who will do anything to make Prince Kai her husband, her king, her prisoner. (goodreads)
My Thoughts: Oh goodness. Where to even start here. I think I have to start off by saying I have learned to just trust Marissa Meyer. You see, last year Cinder was the book that surprised me most. I didn’t really want to read it. The cyborg aspect kind of put me off. Then all if my friends were raving about it and I was asked to review the audiobook. I figured I may as well give it a try. I totally fell in love. I could not wait for more Cinder and Kai. I needed book two. But the I found out it wasn’t just Cinder’s story. There were other fairy tales that were going to be brought in. While I liked the idea in theory I was again a bit scared. Would I like these other characters when all I really wanted was more Cinder? Oh heck yes! I think, dare I say it, I loved Scarlet even more than Cinder. And I loved Cinder a lot. A lot, a lot, a lot, a lot.
In Scarlet we get more of Meyer’s wonderful storytelling. I absolutely adore the way she has taken these fairy tales and made them her own. She’s really breathed new life into the characters. I loved seeing beloved stories with new twists and turns. I also really, really, really loved the way she starts out alternating between Scarlet’s and Cinder’s story but then weaves them together. It was so interesting to see the many ways in which the plot lines came together. Plus, I am a total sucked for multiple narrators. AND, Scarlet’s story is set in France so we get a greater glimpse at the fascinating world these books are set in. So many things to love!
This was another book I read while I was in Mexico this summer. I was totally hooked from page one and simply could not put it down. I spent the entire day reading… on the beach, by the pool, in the hotel room. I didn’t put Scarlet down until I had turned the last page. It was perhaps one of the best days of the entire trip!
If you’ve not read Cinder I highly suggest you change that ASAP! And for those of you who have read Cinder, WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?!?!?! You need to meet Scarlet and Wolf and get reacquainted with the Cinder and crew. Just make sure you block off a large chunk of time… you won’t be able to put Scarlet down!
