I am pleased to be the next stop on the blog tour for The Dead and Buried by Kim Harrington. Kim’s first novel Clarity was one of the first ARCs I ever received or reviewed. I had no idea what I was doing! Somethings never change! I still don’t really know what I’m doing and Kim Harrington still writes books that you can’t put down! Here’s a bit more about The Dead and Buried:
A haunted house, a buried mystery, and a very angry ghost make this one unforgettable thriller.
Jade loves the house she’s just moved into with her family. She doesn’t even mind being the new girl at the high school: It’s a fresh start, and there’s that one guy with the dreamy blue eyes. . . . But then things begin happening. Strange, otherworldly things. Jade’s little brother claims to see a glimmering girl in his room. Jade’s jewelry gets moved around, as if by an invisible hand. Kids at school whisper behind her back like they know something she doesn’t.
Soon, Jade must face an impossible fact: that her perfect house is haunted. Haunted by a ghost who’s seeking not just vengeance, but the truth. The ghost of a girl who ruled Jade’s school — until her untimely death last year. It’s up to Jade to put the pieces together before her own life is at stake. As Jade investigates the mystery, she discovers that her new friends in town have more than a few deep, dark secrets. But is one of them a murderer?
My Thoughts: Confession: I am the biggest baby when it comes to scary books. Ask my students. They’ll tell you. Scary books are the only books I ask them not to tell me about. (Of course this makes them want to read them more and tell me ALL ABOUT THEM. See what I did there? Oh, the sacrifices I make!) Still, even knowing this about myself, I couldn’t wait to read The Dead and Buried. I absolutely adored Clarity and Perception by Kim. Having another YA read from her was such a treat!
In The Dead and Buried we meet Jade. Oh man. Jade has gone through a lot in her seventeen years. Like, more than any teen should have to deal with. So of course, when things start looking up, it’s only a matter of time before something happens. But a ghost? Jade did not see that one coming. As a reader we get to follow along as Jade tries to deal with this ghost set on revenge as well as fitting in to a new school senior year.
This book was a quick and enjoyable read. I really liked Jade’s relationship with her younger brother Colby. I also like all the little facts the reader gets about gemstones and their meanings (Jade’s mother worked with gemstones.) I think my students are really going to enjoy the murder mystery aspect of the story. I had it figured out pretty early one but I know that they are going to love piecing it together. (Note: Since I originally wrote this review I’ve had two students read the book. They loved it… especially the whodunit aspect!)
The Dead and Buried is a book I’ll be recommending to all my students who enjoy mysteries and/or ghost stories. I also think it’ll be a hit with my students who don’t love to read. I’ve got copies on order!
