Companion to Devil’s Kiss

WARNING “About the Book” contains spoilers for book one! “My thoughts” do not!

About the Book: New enemies, new romance, and new horrors,  Billi’s back, and it seems like the Unholy just can’t take a hint.  Still reeling from the death of her best friend, Kay, Billi’s thrust back into action when the Templars are called to investigate werewolf activity.  And these werewolves are like nothing Bilil’s seen before.

They call themselves the Polenitsy – Man Killers. The ancient warrior women of Eastern Europe, supposedly wiped out centuries ago. But now they’re out of hiding and on the hunt for a Spring Child — an Oracle powerful enough to blow the volcano at Yellowstone — precipitating a Fimbulwinter that will wipe out humankind for good.
The Templars follow the stolen Spring Child to Russia, and the only people there who can help are the Bogatyrs, a group of knights who may have gone to the dark side. To reclaim the Spring Child and save the world, Billi needs to earn the trust of Ivan Romanov, an arrogant young Bogatyr whose suspicious of people in general, and of Billi in particular.
Dark Goddess is a page-turning, action-packed sequel that spans continents, from England to the Russian underworld and back. This is an adventure of folklore and myth become darkly real. Of the world running out of time. And of Billi SanGreal, the only one who can save it.

My Thoughts: This is book two in the Billi SanGreal series. All I have to say is please God, let there be a third! Billi is the youngest and only female member of the Knights Templar (I feel the need to make clear that these books take place in a modern day setting.) As you might imagine, she totally kicks butt! Aside from the literal (i.e. beating up all the things that go bump in the night) she has a wry sense of humor that I couldn’t help but love.

Dark Goddess picks up not long after Devil’s Kiss ends. I don’t want to spoil book one for you so I’ll just say that Billi is still dealing with the events that took place. She blames herself for much of it and has closed herself off. This isn’t too hard until she meets an eight year old girl who trusts Billi to protect her. Readers are kept on the edge of their seat as Billi does her best to be worthy of that trust and try and make the right decision. This is difficult when all options seem to be “less than ideal.” She really understands that knowledge and power have consequences and responsibilities that go with them.

Aside from the absolutely gorgeous cover (such a pretty book!) I loved all the history, tradition, and mythology in this story. Obviously there’s the whole Knights Templar aspect which, of course, is fascinating. But there is much more! Billi and the other Templar knights travel to Russia and readers are treated to Russian folklore as well as myths and traditions from other European countries. That’s another aspect I love… the multiculturalism. There are characters and stories from all over the world incorporated in Dark Goddess

Sarwat Chadda’s writing will keep you engaged and invested in the story. Dark Goddess will take you on a race against time that you won’t want to put down. I enjoyed Devil’s Kiss but this follow up novel had me hooked from the get go.

At first when I saw this I thought it was a vampire read – a bit like the Twilight series.
But actually it sounds good and quite kind of historical which I don’t know about you but I love.
I might have a look out for Devil’s Kiss at my local library. 🙂
