Top Ten Book Covers I Wish I Could Redesign

Hi, my name is Heidi and I judge books based on their covers. Okay, it’s not the ONLY thing I use to judge but it plays a part. I’m particularly guilty of this when it comes to buying books for my school library. If a book doesn’t have an appealing cover I’m not buying it because no matter what I do (short of covering it with a paper bag… don’t laugh! I’ve done it!) I won’t be able to get my students to read it. **Note: Some of these covers have already been redesigned and are way more appealing!**
1. Posse of Princesses by Sherwood Smith: I could have put basically any of Sherwood Smith’s books here. I LOVE them and think she is amazing but the covers are not so great! You can actually see the way this one was photoshopped together!
2. Dash and Lily’s Book of Dares by Rachel Cohn and David Levithan: The first time I saw this cover all I could think was “Seasame Street?!?”
3. The Merchant of Death by D.J. MacHale: The main character is supposed to be a fourteen year old basketball star. Too bad he looks ten! As soon as I got the copies with the redesigned covers these began flying off the shelf!
4. The Splendor Falls by Rosemary Clement-Moore: The original cover just wasn’t “enough” for this book! I ADORE the redesigned one though!
5. Nightshade/Wolfsbane by Andrea Cremer: This is actually a case where I wish they would un-redesign the covers! I loved the originals. The new ones just don’t do it for me! What the heck is Calla doing on the new Wolfsbane cover?
6. Out for Blood by Alyxandra Harvey: I think this is a case of not really loving the posed people on the cover look. I didn’t mind it with the first two books in the series but this one just doesn’t work.
7. The Thief by Megan Whalen Turner: Again, this whole series has already been redesigned to look much more appealing (in my opinion anyway!)
8. Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery: Growing up I absolutely adored this story (see my other post today!) I can’t seem to get my middle schoolers in to it. I don’t know if the story just doesn’t resonate with them any longer or what. I think it might help if there were a cover that is more appealing to teens.

lol I’m pretty sure Calla is popping a squat on the new cover. A girl has to pee someplace. I agree with you about pretty much all of these. I do kinda like the Dash & Lily cover but don’t really know why.

I thought of Dash and Lily’s as well. Glad I wasn’t the only one that thought it could use a redo!

I didn’t even think of Dash and Lily, but that is a good call, because you are right…it looks like Sesame Street – ha! Great list!

Thanks for pointing out the Dash and Lily cover. Now that you mention it, it does look like SS.
As for the Anne books. I grew up (being an east coast girl) loving Anne but i think to appeal to the newer generation reading them they have to redo the covers and update them.

I agree with Wolfsbane. I love, love, love the orignal cover for Nightshade and it just makes me sad to see this new cover for Wolfsbane. I’m sure I’ll love the book, but the cover…not so much.

I couldn’t agree more about the cover of Nightshade. The first one was gorgeous! The new one feels… cheap. And what IS she doing?

I am still laughing about the Wolfsbane cover. They really do need to undo that. And I LOVE the new Splendor Falls cover, I bought it then saw the old cover and realized why I hadn’t read it before. I can’t believe the Posse of Princesses cover!

See, I saw Dash and Lily’s Book of Dares and it made me think of Sesame Street and that made me happy.

Duh, Heidi, Calla is seducing you 😛 I guess she’s not succeeding. I would really prefer it if they went back to the old cover on that one.
