“Recommended by…” is a monthly feature in which an awesome bookish person recommends a book that I just have to read. It’s posted in two parts. Part one is the intro to the recommender and the recommendation. Part two posts later in the month and recaps my thoughts on the book.

Check out part one here.

Thanks again to the lovely Anna for September’s recommendation! You should definitely check out her blog. It’s one of my very favorites to read. Love her voice and reviews that get right to the point!! Plus, she’s incredibly creative with the different types of posts she does!

About the Book:

16101128 After the 1st wave, only darkness remains. After the 2nd, only the lucky escape. And after the 3rd, only the unlucky survive. After the 4th wave, only one rule applies: trust no one.

Now, it’s the dawn of the 5th wave, and on a lonely stretch of highway, Cassie runs from Them. The beings who only look human, who roam the countryside killing anyone they see. Who have scattered Earth’s last survivors. To stay alone is to stay alive, Cassie believes, until she meets Evan Walker.

Beguiling and mysterious, Evan Walker may be Cassie’s only hope for rescuing her brother—or even saving herself. But Cassie must choose: between trust and despair, between defiance and surrender, between life and death. To give up or to get up.

My Thoughts:

I was a little leery about this one at first. I am not an alien invasion kinda girl! But I totally trust Anna and if she says it’s a “Heidi book” I’ll give it a try.

I started out by listening to the audiobook. For me, I think that wasn’t the way to go. It’s not that the audiobook is bad. The narration is actually great. There was just something about it that removed me from the story. I mean, I was liking it…. I just wasn’t really into it. I didn’t really care if I turned the audiobook on when I got into the car and I wasn’t sitting in my car after I arrived at my destination just to listen to a bit more. (NOTE: I think the audiobook would be a great way to re-read this one!)

This all changed when I picked up the book. The minute I started actually reading the story I was sucked in. I didn’t want to put the book down! I simply loved everything about it. I especially loved the use of multiple narrators to give the reader a more thorough picture of the world and those in it.

Rick Yancey’s storytelling was, well, WOW! The way he worked everything together between the characters’ stories and within their own “before” and “after” stories… it was just incredible. The experiences and memories of the characters that he chooses to show us were powerful and connected me to them and their struggle in a real way. I’m just so impressed.

Immediately after finishing The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey I put it in a co-workers mailbox. I can tell this is going to be one of the most beat up books I own. I’ll be loaning it to everyone! Thanks Anna! The perfect pick for me.
