“Recommended by…” is a monthly feature in which an awesome bookish person recommends a book that I just have to read. It’s posted in two parts. Part one is the intro to the recommender and the recommendation. Part two posts later in the month and recaps my thoughts on the book.

Check out part one here.

Thanks again to Quinn for taking the time to recommend some books to me! We have very similar reading tastes so I couldn’t wait to dive in to Dragon Slippers! Be sure to check out Quinn’s fabulous blog Quinn’s Book Nook!

Many stories tell of damsels in distress, who are rescued from the clutches of fire-breathing dragons by knights in shining armor, and swept off to live happily ever after.

Unfortunately, this is not one of those stories.

True, when Creel’s aunt suggests sacrificing her to the local dragon, it is with the hope that the knight will marry Creel and that everyone (aunt and family included) will benefit handsomely. Yet it’s Creel who talks her way out of the dragon’s clutches. And it’s Creel who walks for days on end to seek her fortune in the king’s city with only a bit of embroidery thread and a strange pair of slippers in her possession.

But even Creel could not have guessed the outcome of this tale. For in a country on the verge of war, Creel unknowingly possesses not just any pair of shoes, but a tool that could be used to save her kingdom…or destroy it.

My Thoughts:

When I saw Dragon Slippers among the books Quinn recommended to me I knew it was the one I wanted to read. I’ve read and loved Jessica Day George’s Princess of the Midnight Ball (and the other two princess books!) so I knew I was a fan of the author. Plus…. DRAGONS!!!! Heck, yes!

Dragon Slippers was a treat to read. It had so many elements I love all wrapped up in a great middle grade story. Of course there were dragons, but also a strong and compassionate female protagonist, princes, adventure, friendships, betrayals, and embroidery! Basically just a fun and fast paced fantasy!

One of my favorite parts of Dragon Slippers was, of course, the dragons! I loved the way Jessica Day George took some of the typical elements of a dragon story and made them her own. For example, we all know that dragons have a hoard of treasure, right? This is still true in Dragon Slippers, however, what that treasure is might surprise you!

And Creel! What a great main character! I just loved how plucky she was. No matter what came her way she faced it head on. From being sent to a dragon to making new friends… Creel showed determination and quick thinking. She’s a character I would love to be friends with in real life!

Dragon Slippers by Jessica Day George is not to be missed for fans of middle grade fantasy! Thanks so much to Quinn for the recommendation. I can’t wait to dive in to the rest of the books!
