About the Book: Four decades of peace have done little to ease the mistrust between humans and dragons in the kingdom of Goredd. Folding themselves into human shape, dragons attend court as ambassadors, and lend their rational, mathematical minds to universities as scholars and teachers. As the treaty’s anniversary draws near, however, tensions are high.

Seraphina Dombegh has reason to fear both sides. An unusually gifted musician, she joins the court just as a member of the royal family is murdered—in suspiciously draconian fashion. Seraphina is drawn into the investigation, partnering with the captain of the Queen’s Guard, the dangerously perceptive Prince Lucian Kiggs. While they begin to uncover hints of a sinister plot to destroy the peace, Seraphina struggles to protect her own secret, the secret behind her musical gift, one so terrible that its discovery could mean her very life.

In her exquisitely written fantasy debut, Rachel Hartman creates a rich, complex, and utterly original world. Seraphina’s tortuous journey to self-acceptance is one readers will remember long after they’ve turned the final page. (goodreads)

My Thoughts: While I thoroughly enjoyed this one I can see that it’s not for everyone. The action is a very slow build. There is a lot the reader needs to learn about the kingdoms and those who populate it. Dragons and humans have a long and tangled history. Even just understanding the very unique take on dragons takes a bit of time. Personally I loved all of this. I’m a huge fan of high fantasy and in general I subscribe to the “more history = more better” philosophy. However, as I said, this is not for everyone. The above summary has it right when it calls  the world of Seraphina “rich, complex, and utterly original.”

Seraphina was a captivating character. She has so many secrets that keep her so very isolated from those around her. Still, she doesn’t just hide away. She continues to engage in the world and do all she can to find a place for herself. This was heartbreaking to see but made me admire her that much more.

I really loved getting a glimpse of court life and the ways music was worked in. Both things are so very interesting to me. I have no musical ability so I always enjoy reading about characters who do. Also, court life fascinates me. I loved all the fantastic characters we met there.

Fans of high fantasy with great history and a clear understanding of the world and characters will enjoy Seraphina. And come on, it’s dragons!!!!
