Salvation Blog Tour

Welcome back! Today I am pleased to be the next stop on the blog tour for Anne Osterlund’s Salvation. I’ve posted before abouthow much I’ve enjoyed her other books (Aurelia, Exile, and, Academy 7.) I wish more people would them!!! Anne’s newest book, Salvation, is her first contemporary novel. Here’s a bit more about it:

A smart, unexpected romance from an award-winning author.
Salvador Resendez–Salva to his friends–appears to have it all. His Mexican immigrant family has high expectations, and Salva intends to fulfill them. He’s student body president, quarterback of the football team, and has a near-perfect GPA. Everyone loves him.
Especially Beth Courant, AKA the walking disaster area. Dreamy and shy, Beth is used to blending into the background. But she’s also smart, and she has serious plans for her future.
Popular guy and bookish girl–the two have almost nothing in common. Until fate throws them together and the attraction is irresistible. Soon Beth is pushing Salva to set his sights higher than ever–because she knows he has more to offer, more than even he realizes.
Then tragedy strikes–and threatens to destroy everything that Salva has worked for. Will Beth’s love be enough to save him?

For today’s post Anne (with a little help from Salva and Beth) answers this question from me:

Shakespeare has a bit of a role in Salvation. He even touches thededication. Was his influence always a part of the story or did it appear later?

Flirting with Shakespeare
By Anne Osterlund (with a little help from Salva and a lot from Beth)

Salva rolls his eyes at me as I read the topic of this guest post aloud. Because, of course, from the beginning, Shakespeare was always a part of Salvation. And Salva thinks Beth and I have a tendency to exaggerate the significance of the greatest writer ever in the English language.

“That’s impossible,” Beth says. “One cannot overemphasize Shakespeare.”

“One can,” Salva replies. He begins picking up the piles of interview drafts Beth and I have left lying around the living room.

And he’s right. I have to admit that in one of my early imaginings of his story, I had Salva
going off to college to become a Shakespearean actor. Fortunately, he set me straight about his priorities before that seriously flawed plot element ever made into a written draft. Though I couldn’t resist sneaking in the title, “Such Stuff as Dreams are Made On” into the chapter in which Salva—

“A chapter title!” Salva says, dumping the drafts into a garbage can. “You made me act out an entire Shakespearean scene in front of a cafeteria full of screaming high school students.”

I don’t bother to argue with him. No one makes Salva do anything. At least no one except Beth. Who apparently doesn’t have the same qualms as I do about waging this argument.

“That was entirely your idea,” she says to him, then rescues the papers from the garbage and places them instead onto the teetering stack of drafts on the file cabinet.

Salva shudders. “Well, it was your idea to haul the table onto the stage,” he accuses her.

She looks nonplussed.

I agree. It’s a very weak argument. At least for him. “You know, Salva,” I point out gently.
“Valentine’s Day is coming.”

He shoots me a quick glare. He has a plan to quote Shakespeare to Beth on Valentine’s Day. It was supposed to be a secret, but I kind of blurted it out during an earlier blog post.

Beth steps directly into his glare. “Admit it,” she says to him. “Compared to Milton and Virgil, Shakespeare is far from the worst thing you read in AP English.” She twines her fingers with his and looks straight into his eyes.

He doesn’t blink.

But I get the distinct feeling my presence is no longer necessary.

“OK,” Salva admits. “Maybe not the worst.”

And I slip discreetly from the room.

Salva, Beth, and I hope you all enjoy their story! Please feel welcome to visit us any time:
